Just picking a nit...those look like clip-on braces/suspenders. A classy old gent like your protagonist would wear button-on braces. Might be too hard to draw, and too hard for him to fasten with those shaky old hands. And it could require a scene where the warden tries to help him button his braces. Could be creepy. Never mind.
No, I think you're right. As an unclassy non-so-old gent, I've only ever used the clip-ons. Now you've set me off to research what a genuine 1941 suspenders get-up would've looked like. Thanks. Thanks a lot.
